Department of Contemporary Lexicology and Lexicography

Our mission

Our main task is the elaboration of a multi-volume academic explanatory Slovník súčasného slovenského jazyka [Dictionary of the Contemporary Slovak Language], which is intended to provide a basic scientific description of the vocabulary of contemporary Slovak in all spheres of communication. What is an integral part of the work on the said dictionary is also lexical and lexicographical research – we are quite particularly concerned with research topics such as the theoretical and practical aspects of semantics (i.e. word meanings), morphology, syntax and word-formation.

At the same time, we are updating the digital-born Ortograficko-gramatický slovník slovenčiny [Orthographic and Grammar Dictionary of Slovak]: it comprises approximately 135,000 entries and aims to provide users with relevant spelling, pronunciation and grammatical data on individual lexical units, including their evaluation in terms of the linguistic norm, in accordance with the concept of the Dictionary of the Contemporary Slovak Language.

At our department, we also work on developing and innovating tools for computer assisted approach to lexicography and corpus linguistics, which we use when compiling and editing dictionary entries, in particular Sketch Engine, a tool for morphological and collocational analysis of texts.
