Department of Language Cultivation and Terminology

Our mission

In the centre of our interest is the research of the dynamics of the contemporary Slovak language in all communication spheres, the creation and consolidation of terminology and the process of language cultivation. This is employed and reflected in related projects of the Institute. Currently, we are collaborating on the grant project entitled Slovak Orthography and Its Rules in the Context of Contemporary Linguistic Theory and Praxis.

However, an important part of our work is also the provision of expert services and linguistic counselling, i.e. direct contact with the general professional and lay public. We provide advice covering all aspects and spheres of language use – from orthoepy and orthography to morphology, syntax, word formation and stylistics. We answer questions on dialectology, onomastics, etymology and the history of language in cooperation with the staff of other departments. In addition to language counselling provided by telephone and e-mail, we are continually adding contributions to the web-based linguistic counselling database in order to increase the overall effectiveness of our counselling work.

The experience gained from our expertise and counselling activities provides us with the motivation to publish studies and papers not only on the pages of our journals. As part of our membership in nomenclature and terminology committees, we are involved in the creation of terminological inventories. We are also intensively involved in promoting and popularising science, e.g. on the daily radio series entitled Slovenčina na slovíčko [Slovak in a Word].
